In the context of climate change, the post-COVID-19 pandemic, the unpredictable political and financial environment, and ongoing conflicts, it is crucial to promote development cooperation around the globe, notably the Finnish Development Cooperation, as a vital instrument for fostering societal change.
This journalistic initiative aims to identify both the strengths and weaknesses of these cooperations, particularly regarding the health and lives of women and girls, as well as other marginalized social groups, such as Indigenous peoples and individuals who live with disabilities, who are often vulnerable in many countries.
According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Finland, “a well-functioning democracy, the rule of law, human rights, and a vibrant civil society are prerequisites for sustainable social development”. Therefore, Finland's Development Cooperation seeks to promote the realization of these essential elements.
In this project, we will collaborate with individuals and organizations that work closely with the Finnish Ministry of Foreign Affairs to advocate for the rights of women and girls through journalistic tools. Their efforts address various interconnected issues, including democracy, gender equality, bodily integrity, and sustainable development related to natural resource management, among others. Key topics will encompass:
- Cultural properties and their preservation in the context of indigenous/ first nation
- Sustainability of the food economy
- Women's and girls' rights to land, food, water, and energy
- Women’s participation in politics
- Representation of these rights in the media
Additionally, we will amplify the voices of diverse Indigenous communities who are fighting for their land rights, recognizing the intersectionality of their struggles with those of women and girls. In this regard, we aim to highlight the multifaceted challenges these groups face and the pivotal role that informed journalism can play in advocating for their rights and fostering social change.
